Ralph Mupita of MTN named CFO of the Year 2019 at Deloitte-sponsored gala

The CFO of the Year award at this year’s CFO Awards in South Africa has been awarded to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of telecommunications giant Ralph Mupita. Big Four accounting and advisory firm Deloitte was the primary sponsor of the even, which was held in Johannesburg.

As the telecommunications sector continues its rapid expansion in South Africa, MTN has consistently been the top mobile network in the country. German consultancy P3 Group, which conducts annual studies on South Africa’s telecommunications sector, has named MTN as the best mobile network for two years in a row.

Ralph Mupita has been Chief Financial Officer at MTN for both these years. Mupita holds a degree in engineering and an MBA, both from the University of Cape Town, and has also completed a Graduate Management Programme from the Harvard Business School. His professional career spans more than two decades.

Mupita began his career as a Civil Engineer before joining Old Mutual South Africa in 2001. His time at Old Mutual spans over 16 years, during which time he has held a variety of roles, including Strategy Director, Managing Director, and – most recently – Chief Executive Officer for Emerging Markets.

In 2017, Mupita joined MTN as their Chief Financial Officer, and has now been recognised for his efforts over his two years at the firm. Mupita was named CFO of the Year 2019 at the CFO Awards ceremony, which followed an annual gala for financial executives sponsored by global professional services firm Deloitte.

The ceremony was held at the Dimension Data campus in Johannesburg, and was attended by 350 of the top financial executives in South Africa. In addition to Deloitte, which was the primary sponsor, the event was supported by Standard Bank, Oracle, big Four rival PwC, RMB and SNG Grant Thornton.

KPMG was also among the associate sponsors of the event, in addition to Drayton, Glendower & Mokhobo, and MTN itself. Mupita also bagged a number of other titles on the night, including the Strategy Execution Award, the High Performance Team Award and the Finance Transformation Award.
