Cape Town based branding and communications consultancy Atmosphere Communications has appointed Bukelwa Monqo as its new Director, effective from the start of this month. Monqo has been at the firm for nearly ten years.

Monqo will also be tasked with managing Atmosphere’s empowerment fund Zebra Horse Holdings. A journalist by background, she joined Atmosphere Communications early in her career as an Account Assistant, spending three years in the position before moving on to management and senior management roles.

She was appointed Account Director in 2018, and now takes over as Director at the firm, which offers a wide variety of integrated corporate and brand communication advisory services. These include developing creative content solutions, managing campaign activations, and handling social media relations.

The firm was established in 2002 and has offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg, competing in an increasingly vibrant digital marketing landscape in South Africa. Strong new firms are emerging to change the marketing landscape, while incumbent digital marketing agencies are upping their game.

Monqo will steer Atmosphere as it competes with the likes of Ngage Marketing and Hoorah Digital. The firm’s differentiating principle is its focus on creativity and collaboration, and Monqo will hope to strengthen these offerings as she takes charge. Managing Director at Atmosphere Nicola Nel expressed her faith in Monqo to lead the firm.

“Monqo is a true leader and while at Atmosphere, she has led blue-chip clients such as Capitec Bank and Santam, and has implemented award-winning campaigns for our clients such as Siemens, Sanlam and ghd. She has a proven track record as a team leader and a commitment to client service excellence” said Nel, offering insights into Monqo’s contributions at Atmosphere.

Monqo herself provided some insight into her strategy and principles going forward. “I am excited to be part of the generation that redefines the industry and rewrites the playbook. My vision is to continue to foster the strong company culture Atmosphere has built over the past 18 years. The case for purpose-driven organisations — with people at the centre of it all — has never been stronger. Happy and passionate staff are the bedrock of all successful businesses,” said Monqo.

“We are committed to our people's wellbeing. We are also dedicated to continuing to provide essential communications services. From crisis management and corporate communications to content marketing, we're your partner in this journey,” she added.
