South Africa at the forefront of Africa’s gaming sector growth
Africa’s gaming sector is expanding strongly, with South Africa emerging as one of the leading growth markets, according to research from PwC.
According to the latest Africa Entertainment & Media Outlook from PwC, South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya together generated over $600 million in gaming revenue in 2024, with South Africa alone contributing $296 million. While its growth rate of 4.6% CAGR through 2029 is moderate, the country’s gaming market remains the largest and most mature on the continent, supported by robust infrastructure, connectivity, and investment.
Mobile
Mobile gaming is the primary driver of South Africa’s gaming growth story. Affordable smartphones, widespread internet access, and secure digital payment solutions are enabling millions of South Africans to play games on mobile devices, creating a vibrant and accessible gaming ecosystem.
Mobile titles dominate the market, fueled by both international releases and an increasing number of local developers producing content tailored to regional audiences. These homegrown games are helping cultivate a unique South African gaming culture while appealing to global markets.

Esports
Esports is another key growth area. Cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg are hosting regular tournaments that attract players, sponsors, and fans from across the country. Major brand partnerships are boosting the professionalization of the sector, creating career opportunities for gamers, content creators, and event organizers.
The rise of esports has also encouraged investment in gaming infrastructure, from dedicated arenas to high-speed internet access, supporting competitive play and audience engagement.
Digital adoption
South Africa’s mature gaming market is also underpinned by strong digital adoption. Over-the-top (OTT) streaming services and internet advertising are growing rapidly alongside gaming, reflecting the convergence of entertainment channels. Gamers increasingly interact with streaming platforms, fostering communities that engage with games and related content in real time.

Beyond South Africa
While South Africa dominates the continent in scale, other African markets are also seeing rapid growth, highlighted PwC’s report. Nigeria generated $176 million in gaming revenue in 2024, with a 7.4% CAGR, driven by a mobile-first gaming culture and international investment. Kenya earned $153 million, growing at 6.9% CAGR, with influencer-led platforms engaging younger audiences.
While these markets highlight the broader rise of Africa’s gaming industry, South Africa remains the central hub, combining market maturity with innovation and infrastructure.
A previous report from Boston Consulting Group found that the Middle East is another region where gaming is enjoying strong growth.
