Global management consultancy Accenture is set to support South African coal producer Exxaro with comprehensive migration to the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. The transition is aimed at securely reducing costs and opening up new avenues for revenue generation at the firm.

Accenture will support with the transition of a range of operations, which include SAP solutions and other applications that are managed by Exxaro. The focus throughout the proceedings will be on security, agility, cost-effectiveness and scalability, to help Exxaro move into the new paradigm.

With operations across Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia, Exxaro is among the largest coal producers in South Africa. Coal has been among the more resilient commodities when it comes to price fluctuations in recent years, amid general turmoil across the South African and global commodity sectors.

Nevertheless, turbulence in the mining sector has shifted the industry’s focus towards efficiency and modernisation. Research has shown that digitalisation of key mining processes, in addition to digitalising back end operations, can be a substantial boon for the sector and help it stay afloat in times of price fluctuations.

Accenture is supporting Exxaro with its journey, through a cloud migration strategy that included a use-case for the transition itself, a cost-effective transition process, and enhancement to the resilience of Exxaro’s fundamental operations. The operations have been grounded in South African Azure cloud centres to obtain maximum efficiency.

Commenting on the project, Exarro’s Group Manager for Information said, “Accenture’s deep expertise in leading on SAP and other application migrations to Microsoft Azure means that Exxaro will benefit from a more secure, scalable and agile operating environment that is more cost effective than standing up a new on-premises data centre.”

Cloud Advisory Lead for Accenture in Africa Pradeep Roy added, “Exxaro’s decision to move to the cloud puts them in a strong position for greater efficiency and innovation. This approach to transformation will deliver a competitive advantage on a secure cloud platform, enabling them to flex based on business demand and accelerate innovation.”
